Brownstein Picks Up All-America Honor; All-Star Break UpdateUniversity of New Mexico second baseman Mike Brownstein was recently named to the Jewish Sports Review' College Baseball All-American Team (Division I) First Team. Brownstein was one of two Lobos to start in all 59 games during the 2008 season. The All-Mountain West Conference second team honoree from Tucson, Ariz., finished the season with a .350 batting average and led the team in runs (53), hits (89), triples (4), walks (29), and stolen bases (20).7/1/2008
Neda Named To Baseball America Freshman All-America TeamUniversity of New Mexico catcher Rafael Neda picked up his fourth Freshman All-America Team honor of the season on Monday, June 30. Baseball America named the 2008 Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year to its Second Team.6/26/2008
Birmingham Adds Four More To Lobo Baseball RosterUniversity of New Mexico head baseball coach Ray Birmingham recently announced the addition of four players to his first Lobo signing class. Junior college transfers Edwin Carl, Travis Dirk and Justin Howard, and incoming freshman Ben Woodchick bring the number of signees to 14. The Lobos signed 10 student-athletes in the Fall 2007 early signing period. Early signee Cole White, out of Paris Junior College, was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 30th round of the 2008 MLB Draft. White will have until the beginning of the fall semester to decide on UNM or a professional contract.6/19/2008
Smith Signs Free Agent Contract With Dodgers--- University of New Mexico pitcher Stephen Smith recently signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Smith is the third Lobo to join the professional baseball ranks this summer, along with pitcher Bobby LaFromboise and shortstop/pitcher Scott Gracey.6/18/2008
Birmingham Announces Staff ChangesUniversity of New Mexico head baseball coach Ray Birmingham has announced changes to his coaching staff for the upcoming 2008-09 season. Assistant coaches Ken Jacome and Chad Tidwell will be swapping responsibilities. |
