Alford Helps Special Olympics New Mexico Golf Classic

University of New Mexico men's basketball coach Steve Alford was the featured participant in the 2008 Special Olympics New Mexico Sports Auction and Golf Classic at Four Hills Country in Albuquerque this week. Coach Alford helped SONM gross over $100,000, more than tripling the amount made at the two-day event last year.

Men's Basketball Posts Third Highest Team G.P.A. in Spring 2008

The combined grade point average of the Lobos' 21 athletics programs for the 2008 spring semester was a school-record 3.11 according to the UNM registrar's office. UNM's previous high was 3.08 in the 2006 spring semester. The Lobos have now reached a G.P.A. of 3.00 or better for 11 of the last 12 semesters. UNM began tracking grades in the fall of 1988.

Alford to be Featured Participant in Special Olympics New Mexico Golf Classic

University of New Mexico men's basketball coach Steve Alford will be the featured participant in the 2008 Special Olympics New Mexico Golf Classic July 20-21 at Four Hills Country Club in Albuquerque. The two-day event includes a Sports Auction Dinner on Sunday, July 20, and 18 holes of golf on Monday, July 21. All proceeds benefit Special Olympics New Mexico.

Lobo Radio Positions Finalized for Football and Men's Basketball

The University of New Mexico has completed its radio announcing teams for football and men's basketball for 2008-09. Learfield Sports announced late last month Scott Galetti as the new play-by-play announcer for New Mexico football and men's basketball. Joining Galetti in the booth for football is former Lobo Josh Bazinet, while Scott Didrickson will handle analyst duties at men's basketball games.

Giddens Goes to Boston in 1st Round

Former Lobo J.R. Giddens was chosen by the world champion Boston Celtics in the 1st round of the NBA Draft conducted tonight in New York. Giddens, an Associated Press honorable mention All-American as a senior, was the 30th overall selection. He was the final pick in the 1st round. Giddens is the 29th New Mexico player chosen in the NBA Draft, and the first since Danny Granger in 2005 (17th overall pick to Indiana Pacers).
